It Made the Day Worth Living

A smile feels so good to receive. I almost said a smile feels even better to give except I realized in time that that's only sometimes true. I remember my first day of college spilling my coffee down an obscene amount of stairs below me and being horrified as people lifted their books and jackets off the ground, and the person directly in front of me turning around brushing coffee off their book with a sympathetic smile. I remember when my newborn son was crying in the hospital at 3am and I realized I didn't even know a single lullaby or have any idea what to do, and a nurse walked in and put a hand on my shoulder and smiled. I remember this morning when I opened my eyes too tired for the alarm to be going off and and my husband was smiling at me.
